Van Nuys

Van Nuys is a neighborhood in the central San Fernando Valley region of the city of Los Angeles, California. It was founded in 1911 and named after Isaac Newton Van Nuys, one of its developers. It is home to the Van Nuys Airport and the Valley Municipal Building, and it has a diverse population.

History

Isaac Newton Van Nuys was a businessman and landowner who co-founded the town of Van Nuys in 1911. The area was originally part of the Rancho Ex-Mission San Fernando, a Mexican land grant. In the early 20th century, it was subdivided and developed as a residential and commercial district. The Van Nuys Airport, one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world, was established in 1928.

Geography

Van Nuys is located in the central San Fernando Valley, to the northeast of Los Angeles. It is bordered by North Hills on the north, Panorama City on the northeast, Valley Glen on the east, Sherman Oaks on the south, Lake Balboa on the west, and Northridge on the northwest.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, Van Nuys had a population of 103,770. The racial makeup of the neighborhood was diverse, with a large number of Hispanic and Latino residents, as well as significant populations of White, Asian, and African American residents.

Economy

Van Nuys has a mixed economy with a combination of residential, commercial, and industrial zones. The Van Nuys Airport and the Valley Municipal Building are major employers in the area. The neighborhood also has a number of retail businesses and restaurants.

Education

Van Nuys is served by the Los Angeles Unified School District. It has several public and private schools, including Van Nuys High School, Van Nuys Middle School, and several elementary schools.

Transportation

Van Nuys is served by the Los Angeles Metro bus system and the Metrolink commuter rail system. The Van Nuys Airport provides general aviation services.

Notable people

Several notable people have lived in or been associated with Van Nuys, including actors Marilyn Monroe and Robert Redford, and musician Ritchie Valens.
