John Giannandrea

John Giannandrea is a British computer scientist and technology executive known for his work in artificial intelligence. He is currently the Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy at Apple, a position he has held since 2018. Prior to joining Apple, Giannandrea worked at Google where he led the Machine Intelligence, Research, and Search teams.

Early life and education

Giannandrea was born in Scotland and attended the University of Strathclyde, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science.

Career

Giannandrea began his career in technology at Netscape, a web browser company, where he worked on the team that developed the JavaScript programming language. He later co-founded two technology companies, Tellme Networks and Metaweb Technologies.

In 2010, Metaweb was acquired by Google, and Giannandrea joined the company as part of the acquisition. At Google, he led the development of the Knowledge Graph, a system that understands facts about people, places, and things and how these entities are all connected.

In 2016, Giannandrea was appointed Senior Vice President of Search, responsible for all of Google's search products. During his tenure, he integrated AI into Google's search engine and was instrumental in shifting the company towards machine learning and AI.

In 2018, Giannandrea left Google to join Apple as its Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy. At Apple, he oversees the strategy for AI and machine learning across all products and services, as well as the development of Core ML and Siri.

Recognition

In 2019, Giannandrea was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine for his contributions to artificial intelligence.
