British Sub-Aqua Club

British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) is the national governing body for scuba diving and snorkelling in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1953, the club has grown to become one of the largest diving clubs in the world, with over 30,000 members.

History

The British Sub-Aqua Club was established in 1953 by Oscar Gugen, Peter Small, and Mary Small. The club was initially based in a small room above a pub in London, but quickly grew in popularity. By the 1960s, the club had expanded to include branches across the UK and overseas.

Training and Certification

BSAC provides a comprehensive training and certification program for divers of all levels. The training program is based on the internationally recognized CMAS system, and includes courses in underwater navigation, rescue diving, and marine conservation.

BSAC's certification system is recognized worldwide, allowing BSAC divers to dive anywhere in the world. The club also offers specialist courses in areas such as technical diving, underwater archaeology, and underwater photography.

Activities and Events

In addition to training and certification, BSAC organizes a wide range of activities and events for its members. These include local and international dive trips, social events, and conservation projects. The club also publishes a monthly magazine, SCUBA, which features news, articles, and reviews related to diving and marine conservation.

Conservation Efforts

BSAC is actively involved in marine conservation efforts. The club runs a number of conservation initiatives, including the Project AWARE campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the world's oceans. BSAC also works closely with other conservation organizations, such as the Marine Conservation Society and the Blue Marine Foundation.
