Pathein (also known as Bassein), is a city in the Ayeyarwady Region of Myanmar. It is the fourth largest city of the country and serves as the capital of the Ayeyarwady Region. Pathein is known for its traditional umbrella industry, vibrant culture, and rich history.

History

Pathein was originally a small fishing village named Kugut. It was later renamed Pathein by the Mon, meaning "plenty of Muslims" due to the significant Muslim population in the area. The city was conquered by the British Empire in 1852 during the Second Anglo-Burmese War.

Geography

Pathein is located in the Ayeyarwady Delta, near the Andaman Sea. The city is situated 190 kilometers west of Yangon, Myanmar's largest city. The Pathein River flows through the city, providing a vital waterway for trade and transportation.

Economy

The economy of Pathein is largely based on agriculture, with rice being the main crop. The city is also known for its traditional umbrella industry. These umbrellas, also known as Pathein Hti, are hand-made and often used in Buddhist ceremonies. Other industries include pottery, basketry, and the production of longyis, a traditional Burmese garment.

Culture

Pathein is known for its vibrant culture, with numerous Buddhist festivals held throughout the year. The city is also home to several historic Buddhist pagodas, including the Shwemokhtaw Pagoda, which is believed to be over 2000 years old.

Cuisine

The cuisine of Pathein is influenced by the diverse ethnic groups in the region. It includes traditional Burmese dishes, as well as local specialties such as Pathein Halawa, a sweet, sticky dessert made from glutinous rice, sugar, coconut milk, and peanuts.

Transportation

Pathein is connected to other parts of Myanmar by road, river, and air. The city has a small airport, Pathein Airport, which offers domestic flights. The Pathein River is a major transportation route, with boats and ferries providing links to other towns and cities in the Ayeyarwady Region.

Education

The city is home to several educational institutions, including the Pathein University, Pathein Education College, and Pathein Technological University.
