Gizzada, also known as pinch-me-round, is a coconut pastry popular in Jamaica. The pastry is a tart shell filled with a sweet and spiced coconut filling. The name "pinch-me-round" comes from the pinched edges of the tart shell.

History

The origins of gizzada are believed to be Portuguese, as the pastry is similar to the Portuguese dessert known as queijada. The dessert was likely brought to Jamaica by Portuguese Jews who migrated to the island in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Preparation

The tart shell of a gizzada is made from a dough of flour, butter, and sugar, which is rolled out and cut into rounds. These rounds are then pressed into a tart tin and pinched around the edges to create a frilled effect.

The filling is made from grated coconut, sugar, nutmeg, and vanilla. This mixture is cooked until it becomes a thick, sweet paste, which is then spooned into the tart shells. The pastries are then baked until golden.

Cultural significance

Gizzada is a staple in Jamaican bakeries and is often served at special occasions and during the holiday season. It is also a popular choice for tourists seeking to experience traditional Jamaican cuisine.
