Balvenie distillery

Balvenie Distillery is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Dufftown, Scotland, owned by William Grant & Sons.

History

The Balvenie Distillery was founded in 1892 by William Grant, who had previously been a production manager at the Mortlach Distillery. The distillery was constructed by converting an 18th-century mansion into a distillery. The name "Balvenie" is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Baile na Fìne, meaning "village of the lucky one".

Production

The Balvenie Distillery is one of the few remaining distilleries in Scotland that still grows its own barley, malts its own grain, employs coopers to tend all the casks, and has a coppersmith to maintain the stills. This allows the distillery to have complete control over all stages of the whisky making process.

The distillery uses traditional whisky production methods, including the use of a mash tun made from Oregon Pine and copper pot stills. The distillery has a capacity of 5.6 million litres per year.

Products

The Balvenie Distillery produces a range of single malt whiskies, including the Balvenie DoubleWood, which is matured in two different types of cask, the Balvenie Caribbean Cask, which is finished in rum casks, and the Balvenie PortWood, which is finished in port casks. The distillery also produces a range of limited edition whiskies.

Awards

The Balvenie Distillery has won numerous awards for its whiskies, including multiple gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the International Wine and Spirit Competition.
