Don Julio

Don Julio is a brand of tequila produced in Mexico. It is named after its founder, Don Julio González-Frausto Estrada, who began distilling tequila in 1942 at the age of 17.

History

Don Julio González-Frausto Estrada was born in Atotonilco El Alto, in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. He began his journey in the world of tequila at a young age. In 1942, he founded his distillery, La Primavera, and spent nearly forty years perfecting the craft of tequila making. His passion for the spirit led to the creation of the Don Julio brand, which was first launched in 1985.

Production

Don Julio tequila is made from 100% pure Blue Weber Agave, which is grown in the highlands of Jalisco. The agave plants are allowed to mature for seven to ten years before they are harvested. The piñas (the heart of the agave plant) are then slow-roasted in traditional masonry ovens for 72 hours.

The tequila is distilled in stainless steel pot stills and aged in American white-oak barrels. The length of aging determines the type of tequila: Blanco (unaged), Reposado (aged for at least two months, but less than a year), Añejo (aged for at least one year, but less than three years), and Extra Añejo (aged for at least three years).

Varieties

Don Julio produces several varieties of tequila, including Don Julio Blanco, Don Julio Reposado, Don Julio Añejo, and Don Julio 1942. Don Julio 1942 is a special release that was created to celebrate the 60th anniversary of La Primavera distillery.

Recognition

Don Julio tequila has received numerous awards and accolades for its quality and craftsmanship. It is recognized as one of the premium tequila brands in the world.
