Tommy's margarita
Tommy's Margarita is a modern variant of the classic Margarita cocktail. It was created by Julio Bermejo and is named after his family's Mexican restaurant and bar in San Francisco, the renowned Tommy's Mexican Restaurant.
History
Tommy's Margarita was developed in the 1990s by Julio Bermejo, the son of the founders of Tommy's Mexican Restaurant. Bermejo wanted to create a version of the Margarita that highlighted the flavor of the tequila rather than masking it with excessive sweetness. The result was a simpler, purer version of the classic Margarita, which quickly gained popularity among patrons of the restaurant and cocktail enthusiasts worldwide.
Ingredients
Tommy's Margarita is made with three main ingredients:
- 100% agave tequila
- Fresh lime juice
- Agave nectar
Unlike the classic Margarita, Tommy's Margarita does not include triple sec or any other orange liqueur. This allows the natural flavors of the tequila and lime to shine through, complemented by the subtle sweetness of the agave nectar.
Preparation
To prepare a Tommy's Margarita, the ingredients are combined in a cocktail shaker with ice. The mixture is then shaken vigorously and strained into a chilled cocktail glass. The glass is typically garnished with a lime wheel.
Recognition
In 2011, Tommy's Margarita was added to the "New Era Drinks" section of the International Bartenders Association's official cocktail list, cementing its status as a modern classic in the world of mixology.
