Basti is a term used in Ayurveda, a traditional system of medicine from India. It refers to a procedure that is similar to an enema, where medicinal substances are introduced into the rectum. Basti is considered one of the five main procedures of Panchakarma, a set of cleansing techniques used in Ayurveda.

Overview[edit]

Basti is used in Ayurveda to treat a variety of conditions, including digestive disorders, arthritis, and neurological disorders. The procedure involves the introduction of medicinal substances, such as herbal oils or decoctions, into the rectum. This is believed to cleanse the body of toxins and restore balance to the doshas, the three fundamental energies in Ayurvedic philosophy.

Procedure[edit]

The procedure for Basti involves several steps. First, the patient is prepared with a light diet and other preparatory procedures. The medicinal substance is then introduced into the rectum using a tube. The substance is typically left in place for a period of time before being expelled. The exact procedure can vary depending on the specific type of Basti being performed and the condition being treated.

Types of Basti[edit]

There are several types of Basti, including:

  • Anuvasana Basti: This type of Basti involves the use of medicated oils or ghee. It is typically used to nourish and strengthen the body.
  • Niruha Basti: Also known as Asthapana Basti, this type involves the use of herbal decoctions. It is typically used for cleansing and detoxification.
  • Yoga Basti: This type involves a series of both Anuvasana and Niruha Basti treatments.

Effectiveness and Research[edit]

While Basti is a commonly used procedure in Ayurveda, scientific research on its effectiveness is limited. Some studies suggest that it may be beneficial for certain conditions, but more research is needed.
