Suriclone is a sedative and anxiolytic drug in the cyclopyrrolone family of drugs. Other cyclopyrrolone drugs include zopiclone and pagoclone. Suriclone has a similar pharmacological profile to the benzodiazepine family of drugs including sedative activity, anxiolytic action, and providing a deep and restful sleep.

Pharmacology

Suriclone enhances the action of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABAA receptor, resulting in sedative, anxiolytic, and muscle relaxant properties. The mechanism of action by which suriclone and other cyclopyrrolones exert their effects is by modulating the GABAA receptor, the most prolific inhibitory receptor within the brain.

Medical Uses

Suriclone is primarily used for the treatment of insomnia and other sleep disorders, providing a deep and restful sleep for those who take it. It is also used in the treatment of various anxiety disorders, due to its anxiolytic properties.

Side Effects

Like all drugs in the cyclopyrrolone family, suriclone has the potential for misuse and may cause dependency. Side effects can include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and potential memory impairment.
