Osaterone is a steroid that is used in veterinary medicine to treat prostate conditions in dogs. It is a synthetic antiandrogen, specifically, a steroidal antiandrogen, and also has progestogenic and antigonadotropic effects. Osaterone is marketed in Japan and is not available in any other country.

Pharmacology

Osaterone, as an antiandrogen, works by blocking the effects of androgens like testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It does this by binding to androgen receptors in the body, which prevents these hormones from exerting their effects. This can help to reduce the symptoms of conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which are often caused by high levels of androgens.

In addition to its antiandrogenic effects, osaterone also has some progestogenic activity. This means that it can mimic the effects of progesterone, a hormone that plays a key role in the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. This can help to regulate the reproductive cycle in animals, and may also have some beneficial effects on the prostate.

Finally, osaterone has some antigonadotropic effects. This means that it can suppress the production of sex hormones by the gonads. This can help to reduce the symptoms of conditions like prostate cancer, which are often driven by high levels of sex hormones.

Uses

Osaterone is used in veterinary medicine to treat conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer in dogs. It is not currently approved for use in humans.

Side effects

Like all medications, osaterone can cause side effects. These can include gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea and vomiting, as well as changes in behavior. In rare cases, osaterone can cause serious side effects like liver damage.
