Taiwanese Tea Culture

Taiwanese tea culture includes tea arts, traditional tea ceremonies, and the social aspects of tea consumption. While the most common teas consumed in Taiwan are oolongs especially Taiwanese oolongs such as Alishan oolong and Lishan oolong, black, red and green teas are also popular. Many of the classical arts can be seen in the tea culture, including calligraphy, flower arranging, and incense appreciation.

History

Tea was first introduced to Taiwan in the 17th century by the Dutch. The Dutch East India Company had a monopoly on the tea trade between China and Europe for many years. They introduced tea plants from China to Taiwan and began to cultivate tea plantations on the island.
