Stanford University

Stanford University is a private research university located in Stanford, California. It is known for its academic strength, wealth, proximity to Silicon Valley, and ranking as one of the world's top universities.

History

Stanford was founded in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford in memory of their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., who had died of typhoid fever at age 15 the previous year. Stanford was opened on October 1, 1891 as a coeducational and non-denominational institution.

Campus

The university is organized around three traditional schools consisting of 40 academic departments at the undergraduate and graduate level and four professional schools that focus on graduate programs in Law, Medicine, Education and Business.

Academics

Stanford follows a quarter system with Autumn quarter usually starting in late September and Spring Quarter ending in early June. The full-time, four-year undergraduate program has an arts and sciences focus with high graduate student coexistence.

Athletics

Stanford has a strong emphasis on athletic excellence. Its athletic teams are nicknamed the Cardinal, adopted after the university dropped its Indian mascot in response to a 1972 recommendation by the Stanford Native American community.

Notable alumni

Stanford's alumni include 30 living billionaires, 17 astronauts, and 20 Turing Award laureates. It is also one of the leading producers of members of the United States Congress.
