Frederick Pei Li

Frederick Pei Li (born 1940) is a Chinese-American physician and medical researcher known for his work in the field of cancer genetics. He is best known for his discovery of the Li-Fraumeni syndrome, a hereditary disorder that increases the risk of developing several types of cancer.

Early Life and Education

Frederick Pei Li was born in 1940 in China. He moved to the United States for his higher education. He received his medical degree from the Harvard Medical School in 1968.

Career

After completing his medical degree, Li joined the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a researcher. During his time at the NCI, he worked with Dr. Joseph F. Fraumeni Jr., and together they discovered the Li-Fraumeni syndrome in 1969. This syndrome is a rare, autosomal dominant, hereditary disorder which greatly increases the risk of developing several types of cancer.

Li has also contributed to the field of epidemiology, particularly in the study of cancer clusters and the role of environmental factors in cancer development.

Recognition

Li's work has been recognized by several medical and scientific organizations. He is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
