Indian Medical Association (IMA) is a national voluntary organization of Doctors of Modern Scientific System of Medicine in India, which looks after the interest of doctors as well as the well being of the community at large. It was established in 1928 as the All India Medical Association, renamed in 1930. It is a society registered under The Societies Act of India.

History

The Indian Medical Association was started in 1928, and was initially known as the All India Medical Association. It was later renamed in 1930. The association was formed with the primary aim of looking after the interests of doctors practicing modern medicine in India, as well as ensuring the well-being of the community at large.

Objectives

The main objectives of the Indian Medical Association include promoting and advancing medical and allied sciences in all their different branches, promoting the improvement of public health and medical education in India, and maintaining the honor and dignity of medical professionals.

Structure

The Indian Medical Association has a democratic structure with members from all over India. It has over 1700 local branches located in different parts of India. The association is governed by a Central Council which is the decision-making body of the association.

Activities

The Indian Medical Association conducts various activities for its members and the community. These include organizing conferences and seminars, providing continuing medical education programs, and publishing medical journals. It also undertakes various community service initiatives such as health check-up camps, blood donation camps, and awareness programs on various health issues.

Criticism

The Indian Medical Association has faced criticism for its stand on various issues related to medical practice in India. It has been accused of being resistant to change and not doing enough to address the challenges faced by the medical profession in India.
