Tiropita (Greek: τυρόπιτα ) is a Greek layered pastry food, made with layers of buttered phyllo and filled with a cheese-egg mixture. It is served as a party dish and is eaten for breakfast and snack.

Etymology

The word "Tiropita" is derived from the Greek words "τυρί" (tyri), meaning "cheese", and "πίτα" (pita), meaning "pie".

Ingredients

Tiropita is made with layers of phyllo dough that are brushed with butter, then filled with a mixture of feta cheese, egg, and seasonings. Other types of cheese may also be used.

Variations

There are many variations of Tiropita:

  • Individual Tiropitas - These are made in the shape of small triangles and are a popular snack or appetizer.
  • Tiropita without phyllo - This version is made without the phyllo dough and is often served as a side dish.
  • Tiropita with spinach - This is a variation of the traditional Tiropita and is similar to spanakopita.

Preparation

The preparation of Tiropita involves several steps. First, the phyllo dough is layered in a baking dish and each layer is brushed with melted butter. Then, the cheese and egg mixture is spread over the phyllo. This process is repeated until all the phyllo and cheese mixture is used. The final layer of phyllo is then scored, or cut into pieces, before baking. After baking, the Tiropita is allowed to cool before serving.

Serving

Tiropita is often served as a breakfast dish or as a snack. It can also be served as a side dish or as an appetizer at parties. It is often accompanied by a cup of Greek coffee.
