Whitbread is a British multinational hotel, coffee shop, and restaurant company headquartered in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire, England. The company was established by Samuel Whitbread in the year 1742, and it has grown to become one of the largest hospitality companies in the United Kingdom. Whitbread's operations are divided into two main divisions: Premier Inn hotels and Costa Coffee shops.

Etymology

The name "Whitbread" is derived from the surname of the company's founder, Samuel Whitbread. The Whitbread family has a long history in England, with the name being of Anglo-Saxon origin. It is a compound of the Old English words "hwit" (white) and "bread" (bread), and was originally used as a nickname for a baker.

History

Whitbread was founded in 1742 by Samuel Whitbread, who was originally a brewer. The company initially focused on brewing and selling beer, and it quickly grew to become one of the largest brewers in the UK. In the 20th century, Whitbread diversified its operations to include hotels, coffee shops, and restaurants.

In 2000, Whitbread sold its brewing operations to Interbrew, a Belgian brewing company. This marked a significant shift in the company's focus, as it moved away from brewing and towards hospitality. Today, Whitbread's main operations are its Premier Inn hotels and Costa Coffee shops.

Operations

Whitbread operates two main divisions: Premier Inn hotels and Costa Coffee shops. Premier Inn is the UK's largest hotel brand, with over 800 hotels in the UK and Ireland. Costa Coffee is one of the world's largest coffee shop chains, with over 3,000 shops in more than 30 countries.

Whitbread also operates a number of restaurant brands, including Beefeater Grill, Brewers Fayre, and Table Table. These restaurants are often located alongside Premier Inn hotels, providing guests with convenient dining options.
