Twinkie is a popular snack cake in the United States, known for its golden sponge cake exterior and creamy filling. The Twinkie was invented by James Dewar in 1930, who was a baker for the Continental Baking Company. The name "Twinkie" was inspired by a billboard in St. Louis advertising "Twinkle Toe Shoes".

History

Twinkies were originally filled with banana cream, but during World War II, there was a shortage of bananas, and the company switched to a vanilla cream filling. The change was so popular that the company decided to keep the vanilla cream filling after the war ended.

In 2012, Hostess Brands, the company that owned Twinkies, filed for bankruptcy and stopped producing Twinkies. However, in 2013, the company was bought by Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Co., who resumed production of Twinkies.

Deep-fried Twinkie

A Deep-fried Twinkie is a regular Twinkie that has been dipped in batter and deep-fried. This variation of the Twinkie originated at the Texas State Fair in the early 2000s and has since become a popular item at fairs and carnivals across the United States.

In popular culture

Twinkies have been featured in numerous films and television shows, often as a symbol of American junk food. They were notably used in the film Zombieland, where one of the characters is on a quest to find the last Twinkie on Earth.
