Djenkolic Acid[edit]

Chemical structure of Djenkolic Acid

Djenkolic acid is a naturally occurring organic compound that belongs to the class of amino acids. It is primarily found in the seeds of the Djenkol tree (Archidendron jiringa), which is native to Southeast Asia. The compound is known for its distinctive odor and has been used in traditional medicine for its diuretic properties.

Chemical Properties[edit]

Djenkolic acid has a molecular formula of C10H17NO5S and a molecular weight of 259.31 g/mol. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water. The compound contains an amino group (-NH2), a carboxyl group (-COOH), and a sulfonic acid group (-SO3H). The chemical structure of Djenkolic acid is shown in the image on the right.

Occurrence[edit]

Djenkolic acid is primarily found in the seeds of the Djenkol tree (Archidendron jiringa), which is native to Indonesia, Malaysia, and other parts of Southeast Asia. The seeds are commonly consumed as a food source in these regions. However, excessive consumption of the seeds can lead to a condition known as "djenkolism," which is characterized by kidney damage.

Uses[edit]

In traditional medicine, Djenkolic acid has been used as a diuretic to increase urine production and promote the elimination of waste products from the body. It has also been used to treat urinary tract infections and other urinary disorders. However, due to its potential toxicity, the use of Djenkolic acid in modern medicine is limited.

Health Risks[edit]

While Djenkolic acid has medicinal properties, it can also be toxic if consumed in large quantities. Excessive consumption of Djenkol seeds or Djenkolic acid can lead to kidney damage and renal failure. It is important to note that individuals with pre-existing kidney conditions should avoid the consumption of Djenkol seeds or products containing Djenkolic acid.
