Ethmoidal veins
Ethmoidal veins are veins that are part of the human anatomy, specifically the vascular system. They are located in the ethmoid bone, which is situated at the roof of the nose and between the two orbits. The ethmoidal veins are responsible for draining the ethmoid sinus and the frontal sinus, and they empty into the superior ophthalmic vein.
Etymology
The term "ethmoidal" is derived from the Greek word "ethmos," which means "sieve," and the suffix "-oid," which means "resembling." This is in reference to the ethmoid bone's sieve-like structure, which the ethmoidal veins are named after.
Anatomy
The ethmoidal veins consist of the anterior and posterior ethmoidal veins. The anterior ethmoidal vein drains the anterior ethmoidal and frontal sinuses, while the posterior ethmoidal vein drains the posterior ethmoidal sinus. Both of these veins then drain into the superior ophthalmic vein.
Clinical significance
Due to their location, the ethmoidal veins can be affected by conditions that impact the sinuses, such as sinusitis. In severe cases, infection can spread to the ethmoidal veins, leading to a condition known as cavernous sinus thrombosis. This is a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention.
