Dax is a commune in the Landes department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. It is a sub-prefecture of the department.

Geography

Dax is located on the banks of the Adour river, some 20 km from the Atlantic Ocean and 50 km north of Bayonne. It is a market town, also known for its bullfighting and its hot water, and was a Celtic settlement before its Roman foundation.

History

In the 1st century AD, Dax was first established as a Roman military camp because of its strategic location. This was a logical place for the Romans to establish a commercial center and Dax was born. The name Dax comes from the Roman name for the town, Civitas Aquensium.

Economy

Dax is known for its spa resort which specializes in mud treatment for rheumatism and similar ailments. The town also hosts the Cathedral of Notre-Dame Ste-Marie and the Dax Arena, a multi-purpose stadium.

Demographics

As of 2018, the population of Dax was approximately 20,485. The inhabitants of the town are known as Dacquois and Dacquoises.
