American Automobile Association

The American Automobile Association (AAA), a federation of motor clubs throughout North America, is a non-profit member service organization with over 60 million members in the United States and Canada. Founded on March 4, 1902, in Chicago, Illinois, AAA is known for its roadside assistance, travel services, and advocacy for motorists.

History

The American Automobile Association was established in response to the lack of roads and highways suitable for automobiles. At the time, there were only 23,000 cars in the United States, and the need for better roads was apparent. The founding clubs included the Chicago Automobile Club, the Automobile Club of America, and the Automobile Club of New Jersey.

Services

AAA offers a wide range of services to its members, including:

  • Roadside Assistance: AAA is renowned for its 24/7 roadside assistance, which includes towing, battery service, flat tire changes, fuel delivery, and lockout services.
  • Travel Services: Members can access travel planning services, including maps, travel guides, and discounts on hotels and car rentals.
  • Insurance: AAA provides various insurance products, including auto, home, and life insurance.
  • Financial Services: Members can benefit from financial services such as credit cards, loans, and banking.
  • Advocacy: AAA advocates for motorists' rights and safety, working on issues such as road safety, infrastructure improvements, and environmental concerns.

Membership

AAA membership is available at different levels, typically including Basic, Plus, and Premier. Each level offers varying benefits, with higher levels providing more extensive services and coverage.

Impact and Influence

AAA has played a significant role in the development of the American transportation system. It has been instrumental in the creation of the Interstate Highway System and has consistently advocated for road safety measures, including the use of seat belts and the implementation of drunk driving laws.
