Website

A website (also written as web site) is a collection of web pages and related content that is identified by a common domain name and published on at least one web server. Notable examples are wikipedia.org, google.com, and amazon.com. All publicly accessible websites collectively constitute the World Wide Web.

Websites are typically dedicated to a particular topic or purpose, such as news, education, commerce, entertainment, or social networking. They are often created by individuals, businesses, and organizations for a variety of purposes; together, all publicly accessible websites constitute the World Wide Web.

History

The World Wide Web (WWW) was created in 1989 by British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The web was originally conceived and developed to meet the demand for automated information-sharing between scientists in universities and institutes around the world.

Types of websites

There are many varieties of websites, each specializing in a particular type of content or use, and they may be arbitrarily classified in any number of ways. A few such classifications might include:

Website content

The pages of a website can usually be accessed from a simple Uniform Resource Locator (URL) called the web address. The URLs of the pages organize them into a hierarchy, although hyperlinking between them conveys the reader's perceived site structure and guides the reader's navigation of the site.
