Inferior costal facet
Inferior costal facet is a term used in anatomy to describe a specific part of the vertebrae. It is a small, smooth, concave surface on the lower part of the head of the rib. The inferior costal facet is located on the lower edge of the body of the vertebrae and is part of the vertebral column.
Etymology
The term "inferior costal facet" is derived from the Latin words "inferior" meaning lower, "costa" meaning rib, and "facies" meaning face or surface. Thus, the term literally means "lower rib surface".
Anatomy
The inferior costal facet is a part of the thoracic vertebrae, which are the twelve vertebral bodies in the middle of the vertebral column. Each thoracic vertebra has two costal facets on each side, one superior and one inferior, for the articulation with the head of the rib. The inferior costal facet is located on the lower edge of the vertebral body and articulates with the lower part of the head of the corresponding rib.
Function
The main function of the inferior costal facet, along with the superior costal facet, is to form the costovertebral joint, which allows for the movement of the ribs during respiration. The costovertebral joint is a type of synovial joint, which is characterized by the presence of a fluid-filled space between the articulating surfaces.
Clinical significance
Abnormalities or injuries to the inferior costal facet can lead to conditions such as costovertebral joint dysfunction, which can cause pain and restricted movement. Treatment for such conditions may involve physiotherapy, pain management, and in severe cases, surgery.
