Iscotrizinol (also known as Uvasorb HEB) is a chemical compound used in sunscreen products to absorb ultraviolet (UV) rays. It is a benzotriazole derivative, which is a class of compounds known for their UV-absorbing properties.

Etymology

The term "Iscotrizinol" is derived from the chemical structure of the compound, which includes an isocyanurate ring and a triazine ring. The "iso" prefix refers to the isocyanurate, and "trizinol" refers to the triazine ring and the presence of an alcohol group (-OH).

Use in Sunscreen

Iscotrizinol is used in sunscreen due to its ability to absorb both UVA and UVB rays. This broad-spectrum protection helps to prevent sunburn and other types of skin damage caused by UV radiation. It is often combined with other UV filters to provide comprehensive sun protection.

Safety and Regulation

Iscotrizinol is considered safe for use in sunscreens and has been approved for this use by regulatory bodies such as the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States. However, like all sunscreen ingredients, it should be used as directed to avoid potential side effects.

Related Compounds

Other benzotriazole derivatives used in sunscreens include Bisoctrizole (Tinosorb M) and Bemotrizinol (Tinosorb S). These compounds also provide broad-spectrum UV protection and are often used in combination with Iscotrizinol.
