United Spirits
United Spirits Limited (USL) is an Indian alcoholic beverages company, and a subsidiary of Diageo. It is headquartered in Bangalore, Karnataka. USL is the largest spirits company in India and among the largest in the world by volume.
History
United Spirits was originally part of the United Breweries Group, founded by Vittal Mallya in 1944. The company grew significantly under the leadership of his son, Vijay Mallya, who expanded its operations globally. In 2012, Diageo acquired a controlling stake in United Spirits, marking a significant shift in the company's ownership and strategic direction.
Operations
United Spirits produces and distributes a wide range of alcoholic beverages, including whisky, rum, vodka, and brandy. Some of its well-known brands include McDowell's No.1, Royal Challenge, Signature, and Antiquity. The company operates several distilleries across India and has a strong distribution network that ensures its products are available nationwide.
Products
USL's product portfolio is diverse, catering to various segments of the market. The company offers premium, mid-range, and economy brands, allowing it to reach a broad consumer base. Its flagship brand, McDowell's No.1, is one of the best-selling whisky brands in the world.
Acquisition by Diageo
In 2012, Diageo announced its intention to acquire a majority stake in United Spirits. The acquisition was completed in 2014, with Diageo holding a 54.8% stake in the company. This acquisition allowed Diageo to strengthen its presence in the Indian market, which is one of the fastest-growing markets for alcoholic beverages.
Controversies
United Spirits has faced several controversies, particularly related to its former chairman, Vijay Mallya. In 2016, Mallya was accused of financial irregularities and was forced to resign from the board. The company has since taken steps to improve its corporate governance and financial practices.
