Sobrerol is a bronchodilator and an expectorant. It is a monoterpene and a ketone. It is a conjugate acid of a sobrerolate.

Chemical Properties

Sobrerol has a molecular formula of C10H16O. It is a member of the class of compounds known as monoterpenoids. Monoterpenoids are terpenes that contain exactly 10 carbon atoms and are derived from a single isoprene unit. Sobrerol is a ketone, which means it contains a carbonyl group (C=O) and is derived from a hydrocarbon by the replacement of one or more hydrogen atoms by an oxygen atom.

Medical Uses

As a bronchodilator, Sobrerol is used to treat conditions that cause narrowing of the airways, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It works by relaxing and opening the air passages to the lungs, making it easier to breathe.

As an expectorant, Sobrerol helps to thin and loosen mucus in the lungs, leading to an increase in the volume of sputum produced that is easier to cough up. This can help to relieve symptoms such as chest congestion and coughing associated with conditions such as bronchitis and pneumonia.

Side Effects

Like all medications, Sobrerol can cause side effects. These may include nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, and dizziness. If these effects persist or worsen, medical attention should be sought. Serious side effects are rare, but can include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.
