DDAIP or Dodecylamine Propionate is a pharmaceutical excipient used in various drug delivery systems. It is a proprietary compound of NexMed, a subsidiary of Innovus Pharmaceuticals. DDAIP is primarily used to enhance the absorption of drugs through the skin and other membranes.

Overview

DDAIP is a quaternary ammonium compound that has been shown to increase the permeability of biological membranes, including the skin, to various pharmacologically active compounds. This property makes it a valuable tool in the development of transdermal drug delivery systems.

Mechanism of Action

The exact mechanism of action of DDAIP is not fully understood. However, it is believed to work by disrupting the lipid bilayer of biological membranes, thereby increasing their permeability. This allows for the enhanced absorption of drugs.

Applications

DDAIP has been used in a number of pharmaceutical products, including those for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, onychomycosis, and pain management. It is also being investigated for use in other applications, such as the delivery of vaccines and gene therapy agents.

Safety and Efficacy

Studies have shown that DDAIP is generally safe and well-tolerated. However, like all pharmaceutical excipients, its safety and efficacy can depend on the specific drug formulation and route of administration.
