KCNE4
KCNE4 is a gene that in humans encodes the potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily E regulatory subunit 4. This gene is a member of the KCNE family of genes, which are known to modulate the function of the Kv (voltage-gated potassium) channels.
Function
The KCNE4 gene encodes a protein that is known to interact with the Kv channels. This interaction is crucial for the proper functioning of these channels, which play a key role in the electrophysiology of many cell types, including cardiac cells, neurons, and epithelial cells. The KCNE4 protein is thought to modulate the gating kinetics and enhance the stability of the Kv channels.
Clinical significance
Mutations in the KCNE4 gene have been associated with certain cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation and long QT syndrome. These conditions can lead to life-threatening irregular heartbeats. Further research is needed to fully understand the role of KCNE4 in these conditions and to develop potential therapeutic strategies.
