Lino Saputo

Lino Saputo (born June 10, 1937) is a Canadian businessman. He is the founder and chairman of the Canadian dairy company, Saputo Inc., one of the top dairy processors in the world.

Early Life

Lino Saputo was born in Montelepre, Sicily, Italy, and immigrated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada with his family in 1952. The family had a background in making cheese, a skill they brought with them to Canada.

Career

In 1954, Lino Saputo and his family started a small cheese-making business, Saputo Inc., in Montreal. The company initially specialized in making Mozzarella cheese for local Italian eateries. Over the years, the company expanded its product line and distribution network. Today, Saputo Inc. is one of the top ten dairy processors in the world, with operations in Canada, the United States, Argentina, and Australia.

Lino Saputo served as the company's president from its foundation until 1998, and then as chairman and chief executive officer until 2004. He returned as CEO in 2007 and served until 2011. He has been the chairman of the board since 1969.

Philanthropy

Lino Saputo is also known for his philanthropic efforts. He established the Lino and Mirella Saputo Foundation to support various charitable causes in Quebec. The foundation focuses on health, education, and the promotion of Quebec's cultural heritage.

Personal Life

Lino Saputo is married to Mirella Saputo and they have three children. His son, Joey Saputo, is the president of the Montreal Impact, a Major League Soccer team.

Honours

In 2012, Lino Saputo was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to the growth of the dairy industry in Canada and for his philanthropy.
