General efferent fibers (GVE) are a type of nerve fiber that originate in the central nervous system and transmit signals to effector organs such as muscles and glands. These fibers are part of the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary bodily functions such as heart rate, digestion, and salivation.

Function

General efferent fibers carry motor signals from the brain and spinal cord to various parts of the body. These signals are responsible for initiating and controlling a wide range of involuntary physiological responses, including the contraction of smooth muscle tissue, the secretion of glands, and the regulation of heart rate and blood pressure.

Structure

General efferent fibers are composed of axons, which are long, slender projections of nerve cells, or neurons. These axons transmit electrical impulses away from the neuron's cell body towards the effector organ. The axons of general efferent fibers are typically myelinated, meaning they are covered in a layer of fatty tissue known as myelin that helps to speed up the transmission of nerve signals.

Classification

General efferent fibers can be classified into two main types based on their function: somatic efferent fibers and visceral efferent fibers. Somatic efferent fibers control the voluntary movements of skeletal muscles, while visceral efferent fibers control the involuntary functions of internal organs and glands.

Clinical significance

Damage to general efferent fibers can lead to a variety of neurological disorders, including paralysis, muscle weakness, and autonomic dysreflexia. These conditions can be caused by a variety of factors, including trauma, disease, and aging.
