Ed Rendell
American politician
Edward Gene Rendell (born January 5, 1944) is an American lawyer, politician, and author. He served as the 45th Governor of Pennsylvania from 2003 to 2011. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the 96th Mayor of Philadelphia from 1992 to 2000.
Early life and education
Rendell was born in New York City, New York. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He later received a Juris Doctor from the Villanova University School of Law.
Political career
Mayor of Philadelphia
Rendell served as the Mayor of Philadelphia from 1992 to 2000. During his tenure, he was credited with revitalizing the city's economy and reducing crime rates. His efforts in urban development and fiscal management earned him national recognition.
Governor of Pennsylvania
Rendell was elected as the Governor of Pennsylvania in 2002 and re-elected in 2006. His administration focused on education reform, economic development, and environmental protection. He implemented policies to improve the state's infrastructure and expand healthcare access.
Chair of the Democratic National Committee
From 1999 to 2001, Rendell served as the Chair of the Democratic National Committee. In this role, he worked to strengthen the party's organizational structure and fundraising efforts.
Post-political career
After leaving office, Rendell has been active as a political commentator and author. He has also served on various boards and engaged in public speaking.
Personal life
Rendell was married to Marjorie Rendell, a federal judge, from 1971 until their divorce in 2016. They have one child together.
Military service
Rendell served in the United States Army Reserve from 1968 to 1974, achieving the rank of Second Lieutenant.
