The University of Zagreb (Sveučilište u Zagrebu) is the largest and oldest university in Croatia and one of the oldest universities in Europe. It was founded in 1669 and has a long tradition of higher education.
History
The University of Zagreb was officially founded on September 23, 1669, by Emperor Leopold I who issued a decree granting the status and privileges of a university to the Jesuit Academy of the Royal Free City of Zagreb. The university has grown significantly over the centuries and now comprises 29 faculties, 3 art academies, and the University Centre for Croatian Studies.
