Pakistan Medical and Dental Council
_([[:|thumb|left]]
Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) was a statutory regulatory authority that maintained the official register of medical practitioners and dentists within Pakistan. It was responsible for setting educational standards for medical and dental institutions, ensuring the quality of medical education, and overseeing the professional conduct of medical and dental practitioners.
History
The PMDC was established in 1962 under the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council Ordinance, 1962. It was created to regulate the medical and dental professions in Pakistan and to ensure that medical and dental education met international standards.
Functions
The primary functions of the PMDC included:
- Maintaining the official register of medical and dental practitioners.
- Setting standards for medical and dental education.
- Accrediting medical and dental colleges.
- Conducting examinations for the registration of medical and dental practitioners.
- Ensuring the ethical practice of medicine and dentistry.
- Investigating complaints against medical and dental practitioners.
Structure
The PMDC was governed by a council consisting of elected and nominated members. The council included representatives from medical and dental colleges, universities, and the federal and provincial governments. The President of the PMDC was elected by the council members.
Accreditation
The PMDC was responsible for accrediting medical and dental colleges in Pakistan. It conducted regular inspections of institutions to ensure they met the required standards. Accredited institutions were listed on the PMDC's official website.
Registration
Medical and dental practitioners were required to register with the PMDC to practice legally in Pakistan. The registration process included verification of qualifications and, in some cases, passing an examination. Registered practitioners were issued a license to practice.
Dissolution and Replacement
In 2019, the PMDC was dissolved and replaced by the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) through the Pakistan Medical Commission Ordinance, 2019. The PMC took over the functions of the PMDC with the aim of further improving the standards of medical and dental education and practice in Pakistan.
