Princess Christian Maternity Hospital
Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH), also known as Cottage Hospital, is a hospital located in Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone. It is the primary maternity hospital in the country and is renowned for its specialized care in obstetrics, gynecology, and pediatrics.
History
The hospital was established in 1912 and named after Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, who was a member of the British Royal Family. The hospital has a rich history of providing maternal and child health services to the people of Sierra Leone.
Services
PCMH provides a wide range of services including antenatal care, postnatal care, family planning, immunization, and HIV/AIDS counseling and testing. The hospital also has a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for newborns requiring special care.
Challenges
Despite its significant role, PCMH faces numerous challenges such as inadequate funding, shortage of skilled staff, and lack of essential equipment. These challenges have been exacerbated by the Ebola virus disease outbreak in 2014, which severely strained the country's health system.
Future Plans
Efforts are underway to improve the services at PCMH. These include infrastructure development, staff training, and procurement of essential medical equipment. The goal is to make PCMH a center of excellence in maternal and child health care in Sierra Leone.
