Hydrocortisone buteprate is a topical steroid used in the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases. It is a type of corticosteroid, specifically a glucocorticoid, which works by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune response in the skin.

Pharmacology

Hydrocortisone buteprate is a synthetic glucocorticoid. It works by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, which leads to changes in gene expression. This results in a decrease in the production of inflammatory chemicals and an increase in the production of anti-inflammatory chemicals. The exact mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it is thought to involve the suppression of T cells and other immune cells in the skin.

Uses

Hydrocortisone buteprate is used to treat a variety of inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema, psoriasis, and contact dermatitis. It is applied topically to the affected area of skin. The strength and frequency of application depend on the severity of the condition and the response to treatment.

Side effects

Like all glucocorticoids, hydrocortisone buteprate can cause side effects. These can include skin thinning, skin atrophy, and steroid acne. More serious side effects can occur if the medication is used for a long time or over a large area of skin, including Cushing's syndrome and adrenal suppression.

Precautions

Before using hydrocortisone buteprate, it is important to inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or to other corticosteroids. It should not be used on broken or infected skin, or on areas of skin affected by tuberculosis, syphilis, or chickenpox. It should also not be used in children under the age of 12 without medical advice.
