Levocabastine
Levocabastine is a histamine antagonist and mast cell stabilizer that is used in the form of an ophthalmic solution to treat allergic conjunctivitis, or in the form of a nasal spray to treat symptoms of allergic rhinitis. It works by blocking the action of histamine on H1 receptors, thereby preventing the symptoms of allergies.
Pharmacology
Levocabastine is a selective H1 receptor antagonist that has a rapid onset of action. It works by inhibiting the release of histamine from mast cells, thereby preventing the symptoms of allergies. It is also a mast cell stabilizer, which means it prevents the release of inflammatory mediators from mast cells.
Uses
Levocabastine is used in the form of an ophthalmic solution to treat allergic conjunctivitis, a condition characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva due to allergies. It is also used in the form of a nasal spray to treat symptoms of allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, runny nose, and nasal congestion.
Side effects
The most common side effects of levocabastine include headache, dry mouth, and burning or stinging at the application site. Less common side effects include blurred vision, dizziness, and fatigue.
Interactions
Levocabastine may interact with other medications, including other antihistamines, sedatives, and certain antidepressants. It is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.
