Yakutat

Yakutat is a borough located in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is the only borough in the state that borders another borough, the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area. The borough is named after the Yakutat Bay, which is itself named after the Tlingit word Yaakwdáat meaning "the place where canoes rest".

Geography

Yakutat is located on the Gulf of Alaska and is surrounded by the Saint Elias Mountains and the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. The borough has a total area of 9,463 square miles, making it the 8th largest county-level division in the United States.

Climate

Yakutat has a subarctic climate due to its high latitude and proximity to the ocean. The area experiences heavy rainfall throughout the year, with the heaviest precipitation occurring in the fall and winter months.

Healthcare

Healthcare services in Yakutat are provided by the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC), a non-profit tribal health consortium. The SEARHC Yakutat Community Health Center offers primary care services, emergency care, and behavioral health services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, the population of Yakutat was 662. The racial makeup of the borough was 41.3% Native American, 36.9% White, 1.1% Asian, 0.2% Black, and 20.5% from two or more races.

Economy

The economy of Yakutat is primarily based on commercial fishing, government services, and tourism. The area is known for its abundant salmon and halibut populations, making it a popular destination for sport fishing.

Education

Education in Yakutat is provided by the Yakutat School District, which operates one combined elementary, middle, and high school.

Transportation

Yakutat is accessible only by boat or plane. The Yakutat Airport provides commercial air service, and the Alaska Marine Highway provides ferry service to the area.
