HLA-DR8
HLA-DR8 is a human leukocyte antigen serotype within the HLA-DR serotype group. The serotype is determined by the antibody recognition of β-subunit of HLA-DR. This β-subunit is encoded by HLA-DRB1 gene and HLA-DR8 is a split antigen of the broad antigen HLA-DR3. HLA-DR8 and HLA-DR53 are almost always co-expressed.
Function
HLA-DR is a cell surface receptor involved in regulating the immune system. It plays a crucial role in the immune response by presenting peptides derived from extracellular proteins to T cells, a type of white blood cell that plays a central role in cell-mediated immunity.
Association with Diseases
HLA-DR8 has been associated with several autoimmune and infectious diseases. These include rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and hepatitis B infection. However, the exact role of HLA-DR8 in these diseases is not fully understood and is the subject of ongoing research.
Distribution
HLA-DR8 is found at highest frequencies in populations in the Middle East and North Africa. It is also found at significant frequencies in populations in Southern Europe and East Asia.
