Welshpool (Welsh: Y Trallwng) is a town in Wales, located in the administrative county of Powys. It is situated approximately 4 miles (6 km) from the Wales–England border, in the Welsh Marches. The town is low-lying on the River Severn; its Welsh language name Y Trallwng literally means "the marshy or sinking land". Welshpool is the fourth largest town in Powys.

History

The area of Welshpool has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with evidence of an Iron Age hill fort near the town. In the Middle Ages, the town was strategically important due to its location near the border between Wales and England. The town was a flashpoint during the Welsh Revolt against English rule in the 15th century.

Economy

Welshpool has a mixed economy, with a significant presence of both agriculture and industry. The town is known for the Welshpool Livestock Sales, one of the largest one-day sheep markets in Europe. Other key sectors include manufacturing, retail, and tourism.

Transport

Welshpool is served by Welshpool railway station, which is on the Cambrian Line and offers direct services to Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth. The town is also served by the A483 road, which provides connections to Swansea and Chester.

Landmarks

One of the town's main attractions is Powis Castle, a medieval castle and grand country mansion, which is now managed by the National Trust. The Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, a heritage steam railway, is another popular tourist destination.
