Guanoxabenz is a drug that is used as an antihypertensive agent. It is a centrally acting alpha-2 adrenergic agonist.

Pharmacology[edit]

Guanoxabenz works by stimulating alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the brain, which decreases sympathetic nervous system activity and results in lowered blood pressure. It is similar in action to clonidine and methyldopa.

Medical uses[edit]

Guanoxabenz is used for the treatment of hypertension. It can be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive drugs.

Side effects[edit]

Common side effects of guanoxabenz include drowsiness, dry mouth, and constipation. Less common side effects include depression, insomnia, and palpitations.

Contraindications[edit]

Guanoxabenz is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug. It should also be used with caution in patients with severe coronary insufficiency, recent myocardial infarction, or cerebrovascular disease.
