The Tenggerese are an ethnic group in Indonesia, primarily residing in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park region of East Java. They are known for their unique culture and traditions, which are distinct from the majority of the Javanese population.

History

The Tenggerese people are believed to be descendants of the Majapahit Empire, which was a Hindu-Buddhist kingdom in Java. After the fall of the Majapahit Empire in the 15th century, many of its followers retreated to the mountainous regions of East Java, where they maintained their Hindu beliefs and practices.

Culture

The Tenggerese culture is heavily influenced by their Hindu heritage. They celebrate several Hindu festivals, the most notable being the Yadnya Kasada festival, which involves offerings to the gods at the Mount Bromo crater.

Language

The Tenggerese speak a dialect of the Javanese language, which has been influenced by their isolation and unique cultural practices. Many also speak Indonesian, the national language of Indonesia.

Religion

The majority of Tenggerese practice a form of Hinduism that incorporates elements of animism and ancestor worship. Their religious practices are centered around the Mount Bromo area, which is considered sacred.

Economy

The Tenggerese economy is primarily based on agriculture. They cultivate crops such as potatoes, cabbage, and onions, which are well-suited to the highland climate of their region.

Tourism

The Tenggerese region, particularly Mount Bromo, is a popular tourist destination. Visitors are drawn to the area's natural beauty and the unique cultural practices of the Tenggerese people.
