Mercury in Fish
Mercury in fish refers to the presence of the heavy metal mercury in fish tissues. This phenomenon is of significant concern due to the potential health risks associated with mercury consumption. The primary source of mercury in fish is methylmercury, a highly toxic form of mercury that fish absorb from water through their gills and from the prey they eat.
Sources of Mercury in Fish[edit]
Mercury enters the environment through natural processes such as volcanic eruptions and human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and mining. Once in the environment, mercury can be converted into methylmercury by certain types of bacteria. This methylmercury is then absorbed by small organisms, which are eaten by fish.
