Hamburgers are a popular type of sandwich consisting of one or more cooked patties of ground meat, usually beef, placed inside a sliced bread roll or bun. The patty may be pan fried, grilled, smoked or flame broiled. Hamburgers are often served with cheese, lettuce, tomato, bacon, onion, pickles, and condiments such as mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, and a variety of sauces. The term "burger" can also be applied to the meat patty on its own, especially in the UK where the term "patty" is rarely used, or to the use of this form of food in a variety of dishes.

Varieties of hamburgers[edit]

Cheeseburger[edit]

A cheeseburger is a hamburger topped with cheese. Traditionally, the slice of cheese is placed on top of the meat patty, but the burger can include many variations in structure, ingredients, and composition.

Veggie burger[edit]

A veggie burger is a burger patty that does not contain meat. These burgers may be made from ingredients like beans, grains, or tofu.

Bacon burger[edit]

A bacon burger is a hamburger that additionally includes strips of cooked bacon.

Slider[edit]

A slider is a small sandwich, typically around 2 inches (5 cm) across, made with a bun. The term primarily refers to small hamburgers, but can also cover any small sandwich made with a slider roll.

Regional variations[edit]

Hamburgers in various forms appear in a wide variety of regional variations. This list includes hamburgers using different types of meats, different toppings and condiments, as well as regional specialties.

United States[edit]

In the United States, hamburgers may have multiple patties and often include lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles. Cheese, usually processed cheese slices but also other types, is often added as is bacon.

Canada[edit]

In Canada, hamburgers are very similar to their U.S. counterparts. A unique feature in some parts of Canada is the "banquet burger", which includes additional items like a fried egg or peameal bacon.

Australia[edit]

In Australia, hamburgers are served with a variety of toppings, including beetroot slices, pineapple slices, and fried eggs.
