Hydrocortisone 17-butyrate is a topical steroid used in the treatment of various skin disorders. It is a synthetic form of hydrocortisone, a naturally occurring corticosteroid produced in the adrenal gland.

Pharmacology

Hydrocortisone 17-butyrate works by reducing inflammation, itching, and redness associated with skin conditions. It does this by inhibiting the body's inflammatory response, reducing the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation.

Uses

Hydrocortisone 17-butyrate is used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including eczema, psoriasis, and contact dermatitis. It is also used to treat insect bites and stings, as well as rashes caused by allergies.

Side Effects

Like all medications, hydrocortisone 17-butyrate can cause side effects. These may include skin thinning, skin discoloration, and stretch marks. More serious side effects can include adrenal suppression, especially with prolonged use.

Precautions

Before using hydrocortisone 17-butyrate, it is important to inform your healthcare provider of any other medications you are taking, as well as any allergies you may have. It should not be used on broken or infected skin, or on the face unless directed by a healthcare provider.
