French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of the French Republic and its sole overseas country. It is composed of 118 geographically dispersed islands and atolls stretching over an expanse of more than 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) in the South Pacific Ocean. Its total land area is 4,167 square kilometres (1,609 sq mi).

Geography[edit]

French Polynesia is located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. The islands of French Polynesia make up a total land area of 3,521 square kilometres, scattered over more than 2,000,000 square kilometres of ocean.

History[edit]

The first settlers arrived from Southeast Asia in about 200 BC, after a long migration from South East Asia or Indonesia, via the Fijian, Samoan and Tongan Archipelagos.

Demographics[edit]

As of the 2017 census, French Polynesia had a population of 275,918 inhabitants.

Economy[edit]

The legal tender of French Polynesia is the CFP franc. Tourism is a significant industry, mainly to the islands of Bora Bora, Moorea, and Tahiti.

Culture[edit]

The culture of French Polynesia has evolved in isolation and through contact with the cultures of other Polynesian islands and with Western culture.
