The Ghirardelli Chocolate Company is an American confectionery company, known for its premium chocolate products. It was founded in 1852 by Domenico Ghirardelli, an Italian chocolatier, and is one of the oldest chocolate companies in the United States.
History[edit]
Domenico Ghirardelli was born in Rapallo, Italy, and moved to Uruguay and then Peru to work in the confectionery business. In 1849, he moved to California during the California Gold Rush and opened a store in San Francisco. The company was officially founded in 1852 and quickly became known for its high-quality chocolate.
Products[edit]
Ghirardelli is renowned for its wide range of chocolate products, including chocolate bars, chocolate squares, baking chocolate, and hot cocoa. The company emphasizes the use of high-quality ingredients and traditional chocolate-making techniques.
Manufacturing[edit]
The company's main manufacturing facility is located in San Leandro, California. Ghirardelli is involved in every step of the chocolate-making process, from cocoa bean selection to finished product, ensuring quality control and consistency.
Acquisition by Lindt & Sprüngli[edit]
In 1998, Ghirardelli was acquired by the Swiss chocolate company Lindt & Sprüngli. This acquisition allowed Ghirardelli to expand its product line and distribution network while maintaining its commitment to quality.
Ghirardelli Square[edit]
Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco is a popular tourist destination and a historic landmark. It was the original site of the Ghirardelli chocolate factory and now houses shops, restaurants, and the Ghirardelli Chocolate Experience store.
