Highmark is a non-profit healthcare company and integrated delivery network based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It is a large individual not-for-profit health insurer in the United States, which operates several for-profit subsidiaries.

History

Highmark was created in 1996 by the consolidation of two Pennsylvania licensees of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association — Pennsylvania Blue Shield (based in Camp Hill near Harrisburg) and Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania based in Pittsburgh. In 1996, the two companies began to operate jointly under the name Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Operations

Highmark offers large group insurance plans, individual and small group plans, and government programs, as well as dental and vision plans. It operates health insurance plans in Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia that serve 5.3 million members.

Subsidiaries

Highmark's for-profit subsidiaries include vision care insurer Davis Vision and dental insurer United Concordia.

Controversies

Highmark has been involved in a number of controversies and legal disputes, primarily related to competitive practices and payment disputes with care providers.
