Selenium disulfide is an inorganic compound often used in medicinal applications, particularly in the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis and dandruff. It is a bright orange solid that is insoluble in water but soluble in carbon disulfide.
Chemical Properties[edit]
Selenium disulfide consists of 8-membered rings, similar to its lighter congener sulfur. It is a bright orange solid that is insoluble in water but soluble in carbon disulfide. It is a component of anti-dandruff shampoos, which work by reducing the scalp oil (sebum) production.
Medical Uses[edit]
Selenium disulfide is used in medicinal shampoos to treat seborrhoeic dermatitis and dandruff. It works by slowing the growth of yeast that causes these conditions. It is also used to treat tinea versicolor, a fungal infection of the skin.
Side Effects[edit]
Possible side effects of selenium disulfide include skin irritation, dryness, oiliness or discoloration of the hair, and an increase in normal hair loss. In rare cases, it can cause a rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.

Before using selenium disulfide, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
Interactions[edit]
