North Carolina is a U.S. state located in the southeastern region of the United States. It is bordered by South Carolina to the south, Georgia to the southwest, Tennessee to the west, Virginia to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. North Carolina is the 28th largest and 9th-most populous of the 50 United States. It is known for its diverse geography, with mountains in the west, a broad central piedmont, and a sandy coastal plain in the east.
History
North Carolina was one of the original Thirteen Colonies and was named after King Charles I of England. The state has a rich history dating back to the earliest days of European exploration and colonization. It was the site of the first successful English colony in the New World, at Roanoke Island in 1585.
